Antonis Sousamoglou is concertmaster violinist of Thessaloniki State Orchestra. Being one of the most active violinists of his generation, he develops a rich artistic activity as a violinist, composer and orchestrator. He regularly collaborates with all Greek orchestras (Thessaloniki State Orchestra, Athens State Orchestra. Kamerata, Orchestra of Colors, ERT Symphony Orchestra, Athens Philharmonia, Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra, Thessaloniki Municipality Symphony Orchestra, Patras Orchestra), the orchestra of the City University of London, Philharmonia Moments Musicaux of Taiwan, Symphony of the Academy of Sofia, etc.

 

His performances include important venues, such as Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Kammermusiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonic, National Concert Hall of Taipei, St. John's Smith Square in London, Onassis Stegi, “Bulgaria” Hall in Sofia, Athens and Thessaloniki Concert Halls, etc. Antonis Sousamoglou has developed a long-standing interest in the music of the 20th century, having performed works by Berg, Stravinsky, Takemitsu, Messiaen, Korngold, Max Richter, G. Kurtag, Nikos Skalkotas, Giorgos Tsontakis, Chris Theofanidis, etc. many of them in pan-Hellenic premier. At the same time he is intensely active in the field of chamber music.

 

He is a founding member of Kyklos Ensemble. He was also a leading violinist of Athens State Orchestra. He has won numerous awards, including first prize in the “Andreas Makris” violin competition, as well as in the chamber music competitions of Helexpo and Banzendorf (Germany). As a member of the “Sedna” trio, he won the first prize at the Chierri chamber music competition in Italy. 

He represented Greece at the 7th Eurovision Young Music Competition in Warsaw. Since 2010 he has been collaborating closely as a composer with the dance group “Dancers of the North”. Meanwhile, he has written music for theater and cinema. His discography includes three personal albums as a songwriter, as well as numerous participations as an orchestrator and music producer.

 

As an orchestrator he has collaborated with the vast majority of Greek orchestras. Born in Thessaloniki, Antonis Sousamoglou studied violin and advanced theory at the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki. He continued his studies in Berlin, at the Hochschule der Künste and the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, with scholarships from the “Alexandros Onassis” Public Benefit Foundation and the “Art” Society. He completed his postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

 

He graduated with a degree in Konzertexamen from Rostock Academy. He studied closely with teachers such as David Takeno, Christoph Poppen, Stelios Kafantaris, Bernhard Hartog, Ilan Gronich, Werner Scholz, while at the same time he studied advanced theory in the class of Christos Samaras. He holds a PhD from the City University of London, with a dissertation on the violin work of Nikos Skalkottas.
